LISTEN TO MY LATEST PODCAST EPISODE
June 3, 2020

On this episode of The Afrocentric Social Worker Podcast I talk with historian, Professor and Chair of Africana Studies Department, Dr. Greg Carr. He discusses the history of HBCUs, the work of Dr. Carter G. Woodson and his book The Miseducation of the Negro.

We discussed the trauma of coming to the realization of your blackness, being able to process those realities and then wrestling with the awareness that creates. In chapter 2 of his book, Woodson titles his chapter "How We Missed The Mark."

We also explore the work and writings of W.E.B Dubois. Even if you don't agree with Dubois' analysis of the Black condition or the way forward, we have to be able to understand his work and philosophies in order to critically analyze and critique his positions.

In This Episode, Here's What We'll Cover:

  • The history of HBCUs in America

  • Are HBCUs still needed today?

  • The History of Black Social Workers at HBCUs

  • How Racial Trauma creates an awakening and how trauma sets off a trigger

  • The life and work of Carter G. Woodson
